近頃話題に上った「福禄猿」（中華圏の伝説上の猿、幸運をもたらすと言われる）どう訳せばいいのでしょうか？直訳すれば、「福」は fortune 、「禄」は prosperity、福祿猿は the monkey of fortune and prosperityとなるでしょう 。でもかなり長ったらしいですね。最近の英字新聞を参照すると、中国語から直接音訳して「Fulu Monkey」と言えば良いようです！
十二支は英語で Chinese zodiac sign または Chinese animal sign 、12種類の動物については以下のとおりです：
- Rat 子 ねずみ（mouseは不可）
- Ox 丑 うし （cowは不可）
- Tiger 寅 とら
- Rabbit 卯 うさぎ
- Dragon 辰 たつ
- Snake 巳 へび
- Horse 午 うま
- Goat 未 ひつじ （sheepは不可）
- Monkey 申 さる
- Rooster 酉とり （chickenは不可）
- Dog 戌 いぬ
- Pig 亥 いのしし
Year of the (動物の名前)でどの年なのか表すことができます：

B: It’s the year of the Monkey.
